Soap Making is a Hobby Suited for Children
Making your children do arts and crafts is a good way to help them develop their minds while keeping them busy. This is a good alternative as opposed to just letting them sit all day in front of the television or computer. If the usual arts and crafts start to bore your child, you may want to think of alternative ways to keep them busy.
The usual arts and crafts activities include painting or drawing. Others may also include woodworking especially for older kids. But if your child is tired of doing all of these usual activities, you may try suggesting soap making as a new hobby that they may try. This is a lot more interesting hobby and it may keep them busy for long periods of time.
The first thing that you will need in soap making is a mixture of soap that can be molded and altered. You may make soap from scratch using oil and lye, but this is not recommended for children as lye is a dangerous substance that can corrode skin when it comes in contact. It can also emit fumes when dissolved in water. This is why ready-made glycerin soap is better suited for children who want to make their own soap designs.
Glycerin soap first needs to be melted before it can be used for designing. This can be done in a pan, or by simply putting it in the microwave. When your soap is in liquid form, you may proceed to adding dyes, fragrance oils and other ingredients that you can think of to help make your soap more appealing.
When you are satisfied with the ingredients that you have added in your soap mixture, it is now time to let it cool off and harden. You can choose different molds to give different shapes and sizes to the soap. You may also put in different soap mixtures in one mold and come up with an effect like 2 soaps in 1. Try different ideas with your child so that you can come up with a lot of unique designs.
If your child wants a more personalized approach in making the soaps, you may also try sculpting the soaps when they have hardened to some extent. Just be sure to supervise your child if you will use knives in this procedure. You may try adding details to your soap, or try different techniques in adding ingredients to your soap to come up with new designs.
Soap making is a great hobby to have as you can use your creations after they have been made. You may also choose to display them if the designs are really great as it would add appeal to your bathroom. Your child would surely like to show off his creations to his friends and relatives.
As you can see, soap making is a fun hobby to do that will also stimulate your child's mind and helping him develop. It is also very practical as it can be used afterwards especially if the design that your child made is not very good and he doesn't want to display it. This way, he can continue practicing his technique until he gets the hang of it, without any rejected final product going to waste.
